Our trees under threat – Frankfort & Franklin County

At the recent Quarterly SFNA meeting, City Arborist Andrew Cammack made a presentation about two current threats to the trees of Frankfort and Franklin County.

The Emerald Ash Borer and Bacterial Leaf Scorch are already damaging trees in the area and action should be taken now to protect trees and property.

Some counties, including Franklin, are under quarantine — firewood should not be transported between counties!

Your first local resource for information is the county Cooperative Extension office: http://www.ca.uky.edu/county/

Workshop on the Kentucky Historic Preservation Tax Credits

A Workshop on the Kentucky Historic Preservation Tax Credits

9:30 AM – 3:30 PM, Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Preservation On-Site Learning Series, Frankfort, Kentucky

This one-day workshop will introduce you to the Kentucky Historic Preservation Tax Credit that is now available to owners of historic properties that are investing in the rehabilitation of those historic buildings.   For properties that are for commercial use, the credit allowed is 20% of the amount invested by the owner over a 24 month period.  For properties that are used as private residences the credit allowed is 30% of the amount invested.  Non-profit organizations that own historic properties can also take advantage of this program by transferring the credits earned.  If you own a historic building or manage a non-profit organization that is housed in a historic building, you will want to come and learn more about this financial incentive offered in Kentucky. Presenters will include staff from the Kentucky Heritage Council, the state historic preservation office, and from Liberty Hall Historic Site.  Participants will have lunch at the Orlando Brown House (1835) and tour Liberty Hall (1796) to see the rehabilitation work already completed and hear about plans for work still to be done.

Proposal to design & sell a calendar for the SFNA

An interesting fundraising idea has been presented to the South Frankfort Neighborhood Association (SFNA) board regarding a group effort to publish a calendar that would showcase the South Frankfort community.  This idea was developed by April Smith and was brought up briefly at the last quarterly meeting on February 4th.

This artistic calendar would portray the quality and history of notable homes and commercial buildings in South Frankfort and would enhance the public’s feelings about this historic community.  Since South Frankfort is losing some of its structures, it would be a proactive effort by the group to preserve the area’s history.  Through this calendar the diversity of the neighborhood would be recorded.

What would be needed:

1.  A committee to work together on all phases of developing and publishing the calendar.

2.  Members involved in the selection of the properties to be included in this first calendar.

3.  Suggestions for, and the selection of, the artist to be used.

This could be an effective fundraiser for the Randy Bacon Memorial Scholarship fund.

We need your help!

What you can do:

1.  Be willing to work on the committee to help develop this project

2.  Share your ideas on which homes and commercial buildings you would like to see in the calendar

3.  Share your thoughts about an artist that you would recommend

Please respond to Bruce Cassidy, or Becky Bishop, with your ideas and/or desire to be on the committee for this project by the end of February.

An overview document is available at this link and your review and comments are appreciated.
