SFNA 4th of July 2016 plans & events

The South Frankfort Neighborhood Association is pleased to assist in promoting the annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July event on the grounds of Liberty Hall and Orlando Brown houses. The event begins at 2 p.m. and will allow the young and young at heart to run through the sprinklers, the kiddos will have a patriotic wheels parade, and everyone can enjoy a performance by the Frankfort Brass.

Finish the evening in our historic city watching the annual fireworks show presented by the VFW Post 4075.  SFNA has requested that the top level of the Capitol Annex parking garage be closed to vehicles (parking available on levels 2-6 with access from Old Lawrenceburg Road).

Trees need professional attention

Mature trees need to be seen by a certified arborist for your safety and their continued long life. Now is a good time to schedule a visit if you cannot recall the last time a tree professional evaluated your property.

Use this tool to find a certified arborist in Kentucky (or anywhere else):

South Frankfort, June 2016: This large tree had a large section sheer off and fall between two houses, it grazed the roofline of one. The damage could have been much greater but the two home owners now have an unexpected situation to deal with.

Louisville, KY (June 6, 2016) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 Office advises motorists of the temporary closure of US 60 in Franklin County later this week for maintenance work. The section of US 60 known as “Louisville Road Hill” will be closed between Lafayette Drive and Taylor Avenue (mile points 7.2 to 7.9). KYTC crews will be performing tree trimming and ditch cleaning in this area.

Frankfort’s trees – Pin Oaks & Bacterial Leaf Scorch disease

Our friends in the Tanglewood Neighborhood Association kindly shared this information from the City Arborist with us:

The Leawood Drive tree issue was, and continues to be the same as what Tanglewood is facing. The disease is called Bacterial Leaf Scorch and it is hammering our pin oaks. There are other trees that are susceptible to it, but here in Frankfort, it has really settled into our pin oaks.

Currently, there is no cure.

Last week however, there was a team of Research Scientists from MN in town as Frankfort was selected to participate in a treatment trial. I am optimistic that something positive will come from this. They will be back in mid-late August to assess the treated trees.

I’ve included two links to websites with more information on the disease and recommendations for prolonging the inevitable death of the tree.  The Tree Geek is maintained by the company doing the trial and you are likely familiar with UK- host of the other site.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to stay in contact with me. Also, I am posting articles in the State-Journal as updates are available on the trials, so you may want to keep a lookout there as well for new information.
