23 Sept 2017 – town hall meeting on public employee pension systems in Frankfort

Senator Carroll and Rep. Graham to hold town hall meeting on public employee pension systems in Frankfort

Senator Julian M. Carroll and Rep. Derrick Graham, both D-Frankfort, are holding a town hall meeting on the public employee pension systems on September 23 at 9 a.m. at Frankfort City Hall.

The town hall meeting will address public employee pension systems and the concerns of all state employees, county system employees (CERS), teachers and retirees from each of the pension systems.

Senator Carroll and Rep. Graham will be available to hear concerns, respond to questions, and share their opposition to some of the proposed recommendations by the PFM Consulting Group hired to evaluate the retirement systems.

The legislators encourage all state employees, county employees, teachers and retirees to attend the public meeting.

Governor Matt Bevin has repeatedly said he will call legislators into a special session to address the unfunded pension systems.

“Currently, there is not a proposal to address the pension shortfalls,” said Senator Carroll. “But, be assured, I do not support violating our inviolable contract with current vested employees and teachers or retirees.”

Rep. Graham said the state should honor its obligation to its employees and retirees and not put this burden on their backs. “We have a commitment to our employees and our retirees and we need to stand behind that commitment,” he added.

Senator Carroll said he plans to hold town hall meetings in all the counties in the 7th district that he represents. Those counties are Anderson, Franklin, Gallatin, Owen, and Woodford counties. Rep. Graham represents the 57th district of Franklin County. The town hall meeting will be in the council chamber meeting room at city hall.

Plan to redevelop downtown & Tower Plaza

“The City of Frankfort and Franklin County will soon be advertising a Request for Qualifications for a consulting firm to create a Master Plan for the redevelopment of portions of Frankfort including the downtown core, adjacent corridors and the current Capital Plaza Complex. We encourage citizens to submit names of consulting firms they feel would be a good fit for this project. If you have visited a town or city you felt was particularly inviting or appealing following a redevelopment, please submit the city name and consultant’s contact information, to cparrish@frankfort.ky.gov , PRIOR TO September 23, 2017.”

Gov. Bevin Launches ‘Beautify the Bluegrass’ Initiative

Contest encourages Kentuckians to make their communities shine

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 25, 2017) – Gov. Matt Bevin today launched his new “Beautify the Bluegrass” initiative, calling on Kentuckians to come together to make their hometowns shine.

“I want to encourage people in every Kentucky community to figure how out they can become the most beautiful community in the Commonwealth,” said Gov. Bevin. “The concept is simple: Identify a problem that needs attention, and then find a way to get involved in repairing, enhancing or beautifying it.”

Gov. Bevin invites citizens to form volunteer teams and set to work improving the aesthetics of a neglected area of their town. Projects can include removing litter, mowing, landscaping or other visual improvements.

Kentuckians who wish to participate in this contest are invited to take the following simple steps:

1)    Find an area in your community that needs cleanup, repair or enhancement.

2)    Recruit a team to help. Teams can consist of 1 to 200 participants.

3)    Take several before, during and after photos to clearly display how your project made a difference.

4)    Upload your photos and project information using the entry form on the “Beautify the Bluegrass” webpage (governor.ky.gov/services/beautify-the-bluegrass) by Sept. 20.

Note: Please ensure that your team has permission from property owners (or public  officials in the case of public property) before beginning your project. And please work safely, using safety gear appropriate to the job.

The winning team will be notified in October, and Gov. Bevin and Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton will host a catered barbecue (not provided at taxpayer expense) for up to 200 team members in that community.

Participants can also access the entry form and share project updates on the “Beautify the Bluegrass” Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/BeautifyTheBluegrass).

The application was provided by Frankfort-based Kentucky Interactive, LLC (aka Kentucky.gov) via a public-private partnership at no cost to the Governor’s Office.

Frankfort Flood Wall Exercises to Temporarily Close Streets

August 14, 2017 – Frankfort Public Works has announced that its Flood Wall Division will be conducting a routine Floodwall Exercise on Friday, August 25, 2017.

The Exercise consists of installing Floodwall closures at appropriate locations around the City, according to Streets Superintendent Keith Meriwether. The Division conducts the Floodwall Exercise periodically to ensure the system will work properly if needed during potential flooding events throughout the year, said Meriwether.

Installation of the Floodwall closures will result in the temporary closing of multiple streets.  However, these street closings are estimated to last only two to four hours.

At approximately 4 p.m. on August 25 Battle Alley and the parking area behind the Public Safety Building at 300 West Second Street will be closed.

At approximately 8 p.m. on August 25 Bridge Street and the access road behind Buffalo Trace and adjacent to Lewis Ferry Road will be closed.

Citizens are encouraged to find alternate routes during these closures.  Estimated duration of these closures is approximately two hours, however, the closures may last longer depending on unforeseen circumstances.

Police Department seeking information about two armed robberies

The Frankfort Police Department is seeking information about two armed robberies and an attempted robbery early Monday morning.

A delivery truck driver told police, who were dispatched at 4:41 a.m. to DaVinci’s Pizza on Louisville Road, that someone pointed a handgun at him and took his wallet, according to a police department news release.

Two hours later a female victim reported that a man pointed a gun at her and took money from her at 333 E. Fourth St. in south Frankfort. A few minutes later, in an attempted robbery on nearby Felmer Court, someone pointed a gun at a third victim and demanded money but fled.

“We’re looking at every angle but, yes, they could very well be connected,” Capt. Chris Quire said Wednesday.

The victim at DaVinci’s described the suspect as “a black male between 5’10 to 6’2 with short hair and a slightly muscular build,” according to the news release. The robber fled on foot, but the victim noticed a suspicious vehicle leaving the area. It was a “black or dark-colored import sedan with a loud exhaust.” The victim in the robbery on Fourth Street described that robber as a black male wearing “a dark blue or black zip-up hooded sweatshirt with a dark blue or black bandana over his face,” according to the news release.

The victim in the attempted robbery on Felmer Court described the gunman as wearing a navy blue sweatshirt with his or her face covered. The theft of a small drone from a vehicle was also reported in the area, but police do not know if there is a connection between the theft and the robberies, according to the news release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Kenny Keith at 502-875-8523 or Frankfort Crime Stoppers at 502-875-8648.
