Gov. Bevin and First Lady Announce Charity Auction

to Participate in Capital Plaza Tower Implosion

Proceeds will benefit #WeAreKY! Inc., First Lady’s foundation
for children and families

FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 6, 2018) – Governor Matt Bevin and First Lady Glenna Bevin today announced an online auction to push the ceremonial plunger for the implosion of the Capital Plaza Tower in downtown Frankfort. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the First Lady’s foundation, #WeAreKY! Inc., which seeks to better the lives of Kentucky’s most vulnerable children and families.

The winner of the auction will join Gov. Bevin and state and local officials onstage during pre-implosion festivities on Sunday, March 11, and will push the ceremonial plunger that signals the start of the controlled demolition at 1:30 p.m. (ET) that day. The winner will also receive two complimentary tickets to attend a luncheon prior to the implosion hosted by the #WeAreKY! Foundation.

“This is a unique opportunity to be a part of Kentucky history by blowing up the tallest building in the Commonwealth that is not located in either Louisville or Lexington,” said Gov. Bevin. “The demolition of the Capital Plaza complex signals the start of an exciting new project that will bring architectural and economic renewal to downtown Frankfort. The auction will be open to the public through Saturday, March 10 at 5:00 p.m. (ET), and the final bid will be tax deductible. The winning bidder will be notified the same day.

“It seemed like a natural pairing to offer this unique opportunity in support of the work being done by the #WeAreKy! Foundation,” said First Lady Glenna Bevin. “The proceeds from the auction will be used to further the work of the foundation and to provide support for Kentucky foster care and adoption initiatives.”

Opened in 1972 and rising some 330 feet above Mero Street, the 28-story Capital Plaza Tower housed various state offices until its final tenants departed in October 2016.
